Rules governing the UAEMT skill competition.

  • 1.       Teams will be composed of five persons, including a captain and at least one Advanced EMT.  An additional person may be carried as a team member to act as an alternate or substitute. Victims will be provided by the UAEMT committee.
  • 2.       Four scenarios are usually worked, but if the judges need more or less to determine the winner or to break a tie, several scenarios may be used. CPR must be demonstrated on a manikin by each member of the team, but it need not be part of the problem.
  • 3.       The latest, National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards for EMR, EMT and AEMT along with National EMS Scope of Practice Model; will be used as the standard for this competition. The Utah State EMS Protocol Guidelines as published and available for download on the Utah Department of Health Bureau of EMS & Preparedness  web site www.health.utah.gov/ems/stateprotocolguidelines/)  will be the governing document and reference guide for all UAEMT  medical competitions. Copies of this manual shall be at the competition for use by the judges.
  • 4.       The teams will be numbered consecutively, and they must occupy the position assigned to them on the field.
  • 5.       No practicing will be allowed on the field before the beginning of the contest.
  • 6.       All scenarios will be worked in marked off spaces or rooms which shall contain only the judge and the contesting teams. Spectators are welcome and encouraged, but cannot not give aid to teams.
  • 7.       All teams not performing a scenario shall be placed in a location where they are unable to obtain information regarding the scenario while it is being worked.
  • 8.       No persons, except officials, will be allowed to communicate with teams waiting to perform scenarios or while working scenarios. Teams who have performed will not be permitted to communicate with teams waiting their turn.
  • 9.       Accompanying officials, substitutes or friends of a team shall remain away from the team and make no effort to communicate with it during or between the scenarios.

Timing

  • A.      Scenarios will be kept in a sealed envelope retained by the judges, and given to the team captains.
  • B.      Three minutes will be allowed for reading of the scenarios.
  • C.      A signal will be given to indicate the time for starting the problem.
  • D.      A signal will be given when the working time for each problem is completed. This period is 12 minutes.

Judges at each problem should critique each team upon completion of their station, for three minutes or less should they choose. The Judges may choose not to critique the teams.

Judging

  • B.      The judges will be skilled in First Aid Training.
  • C.      Judges will receive a score card and a copy of the scenario.
  • D.      Judges should not ask questions or interfere with a team in any way while it is working on a scenario. Questions may be asked after the competition to determine why certain procedures or manipulations were carried out.
  • E.       Judges will be required to examine carefully the work being done in each problem.
  • F.       During competition a judge will not discuss discounts with anyone other than another judge and especially not within hearing of any team member or spectator.
  • G.     Judges should exercise care in marking a discount sheet so that no team member or spectator can see or get an idea of the discount charged. Care shall be taken to mark the team number, scenario number and discounts on the score card and sign the card in the space provided.
  • H.      The judge must see that no patient is actually injured by foreign objects, resuscitation or CPR.

You may bring your own jump kit. The UAEMT committee will provide a variety of choices of all supplies needed to care for each injury they have in the four scenarios. Enough materials must be supplied so that all wounds can be cared for adequately.
